What Is Heat Shrink Tubing?
Heat shrink tubing is a polymer sleeve that contracts significantly in diameter — typically to 50% (2:1 ratio) or 33% (3:1 ratio) of its original size — when exposed to heat. The tubing is slid over a wire or connection before work begins, then moved into position and heated after the joint is complete. The result is a tight-fitting insulated sleeve that conforms to the shape of the connection underneath.
Adhesive-lined versions have an inner hot-melt glue layer that activates during shrinking, permanently bonding the tube to the connection and sealing any gap at the ends. This makes adhesive-lined tubing significantly more durable and moisture-resistant than standard single-wall heat shrink.
2:1 vs 3:1 Shrink Ratio — Which Do You Need?
The shrink ratio is the most important specification to understand:
2:1 ratio: Shrinks to half its original diameter. Suitable for regular cylindrical connections where the wire diameter is close to the tube diameter. Lower cost and more widely available.
3:1 ratio: Shrinks to one-third its original diameter. Recommended for any connection with a raised solder joint, stepped connector body, or where extra coverage range is needed. A single 3:1 tube covers a much wider range of cable sizes and connection shapes.

How to Select the Right Size
Heat shrink tubing is sized by its pre-shrink inner diameter. To select correctly:
Measure the outer diameter of the widest point of the connection — this includes the connector body, solder joint, or splice.
Select a tube whose pre-shrink diameter is 20–40% larger than your measurement. This ensures the tube slides over the connection easily before heating.
After shrinking, the tube will grip tightly down to its post-shrink diameter — check that the post-shrink size is smaller than your wire diameter to confirm a tight seal.

What is the difference between adhesive-lined and non-adhesive heat shrink tubing?
Non-adhesive (single-wall) heat shrink tubing shrinks and grips but does not seal against moisture — water can still enter through the open ends. Adhesive-lined (dual-wall) tubing has a hot-melt inner layer that melts during shrinking and creates a waterproof seal. For any wet, marine, or automotive application, always use adhesive-lined tubing. For simple indoor wire insulation where waterproofing is not needed, single-wall is sufficient and less expensive.

Can you reuse heat shrink tubing?
No. Heat shrink tubing is a single-use product. Once shrunk, the polymer has permanently deformed and cannot be re-expanded. Adhesive-lined tubing is additionally bonded to the wire — it cannot be removed cleanly. If a connection needs to be reopened, cut the tubing with a utility knife and replace it with a new piece.

What tools do I need to apply heat shrink tubing?
A heat gun is the recommended tool. A 300–500W adjustable heat gun at 90–110°C provides ideal control for most consumer wire sizes. In a pinch, a lighter can work for small diameter single-wall tubing on non-critical repairs, but adhesive-lined tubing works best with a heat gun that provides even, controlled heat across the full length of the tube. Do not use a soldering iron directly on the tubing.

What temperature does heat shrink tubing need?
TIESELX 3:1 adhesive-lined heat shrink begins to activate at 80°C (176°F) and reaches full recovery at 125°C (257°F). Most heat guns set to their medium or low setting achieve this comfortably. Keep the heat gun moving along the tube’s length rather than holding it stationary, to ensure even shrinking from one end to the other.

Is heat shrink tubing flame retardant?
TIESELX heat shrink tubing is manufactured from flame-retardant polyolefin that meets UL94 V-2 or V-0 self-extinguishing requirements depending on the wall thickness. The tubing will not sustain combustion once removed from a flame. It is not rated for continuous service at temperatures above 125°C.

How does heat shrink tubing compare to electrical tape?
Heat shrink tubing is vastly superior to electrical tape for permanent installations. Electrical tape loosens over time, adhesive degrades in heat and moisture, and the tape unravels — especially on automotive and outdoor applications. Heat shrink tubing creates a permanent, dimensionally stable sleeve that does not loosen, unravel, or degrade under normal service conditions. For any connection that needs to last years rather than months, heat shrink is the professional choice.

Can heat shrink tubing be used over connectors?
Yes — this is one of the most common applications. For crimp connectors, ring terminals, spade connectors, and butt splices, a length of heat shrink tubing slid over the connection after crimping provides insulation, strain relief, and in adhesive-lined versions a waterproof seal around the entire assembly.
