Nylon cable ties are molded from nylon 6/6, a durable engineering-grade plastic that combines high tensile strength with flexibility. Nylon 6/6 resists oils, most chemicals, and a wide temperature range, which makes it the standard material for everyday cable bundling indoors and out.
Choose a tie whose length is at least three times the diameter of the bundle you are securing, and match the tensile strength to the load. As a guide, 4–8 inch ties suit light cable bundles, while 11–14 inch ties handle thicker looms, pipes, and hoses.
Standard nylon cable ties have a one-way ratchet and are designed for permanent, single use — they are cut off to remove. If you need to open and re-close ties repeatedly, choose releasable or reusable ties instead.
Natural (white) nylon ties are best kept indoors, as prolonged UV exposure makes them brittle over time. For outdoor use, choose UV-resistant black nylon ties, which contain carbon black stabilizers that protect against sunlight.
